Description of Role

As the Golf Course Superintendent, you will have a dynamic role encompassing various responsibilities to ensure the maintenance and operation of our prestigious Riverview Golf Course. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, you will lead a team of 10-12 seasonal staff members while working closely with the General Manager and Administrative Personnel to provide an exceptional experience for our guests.

Responsibilities and Duties

OPERATIONS

  • Communicates frequently with the Board of Directors and General Manager to discuss conditions, activities and member/client feedback to ensure the golf course is providing healthy and high quality playing conditions
  • Will consult and collaborate with the Club’s General Manager regarding scheduling and maintenance issues that affect the playability of the course and/or the golf club facilities.
  • Ensures that all golf course maintenance activities are conducted consistent to Club policies and procedures, and within the approved budget established by the Board of Directors.
  • Ensure that all golf course maintenance activities are conducted in compliance with all municipal, provincial, and federal statutes, including but not limited to health and safety regulations and pesticide/herbicide management regulations.
  • Supervises maintenance and operation of drainage, irrigation and other mechanical water systems – tracking water usage and providing monthly reporting on retaining ponds
  • Plans, organizes and directs the maintenance and construction of putting green, tees, fairways, rough and bunkers.
  • Manage and oversee all golf course capital improvement projects
  • Oversees all planting, fertilizing and chemical applications and other care of turf plants, shrubs and trees on the golf course and clubhouse surroundings
  • Will maintain appropriate pesticide applicators license(s) required to perform duties of this position.
  • Ensures the chemicals,  and controlled products are used, stored and disposed of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. Maintains required records.
  • Ensures that all associates obtain proper training and/or licenses needed to perform job tasks safely and within city, provincial and federal regulations. Addresses all real or perceived environmental concerns.
  • Develop equipment management and capital replacement plans
  • Schedules maintenance practices around member play and outings to maximize the efficiency of the tee-sheet and minimize disruption to members and guests
  • Will be responsible to coordinate all maintenance and repair of the Riverview Golf Course including but not limited to turfgrass maintenance, irrigation operation and repair, and all related facility and building maintenance or construction.
  • Will co-ordinate and manage the maintenance of the Club’s vehicle and equipment fleet.
  • Will attend Board or Club meetings as requested by the Board of Directors in a consulting capacity to provide reports and professional advice or opinions as it relates to the golf course operations.
  • Coordinates snow removal and winter maintenance activities

HUMAN RESOURCES

  • Interviews, hires, supervises, trains, and disciplines employees in the maintenance department
  • Will promote and encourage a positive work environment amongst all golf club staff, members, and patrons
  • Administers and enforces all Club rules, regulations and policies for maintenance staff
  • Coordinates scheduling for all personnel assigned to the maintenance department
  • Prepares and maintains all record keeping for the maintenance department (i.e. HR files, Inventory files, fertilization and chemical logs)
  • Create, distribute and present reports of maintenance activities as required
  • Prepares, reviews and updates the grounds manual

ADMINISTRATION

  • Prepare the annual operating budget and capital improvements budget for the maintenance department; takes corrective actions as necessary to help assure budget goals are met
  • Supervises and controls all maintenance expenses associated with Golf Course Operations, including payroll, supplies, chemicals and fertilizers
  • Reconciles and provides timely coding of all invoices, payroll and other required documents
  • Implements sound purchasing procedures utilizing preferred vendors when possible
  • Manages parts inventory and oversees all repairs and scheduled maintenance for all golf course maintenance equipment
  • Protect the companies interests by an awareness of and a compliance of all applicable regulations including course and town policies

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Attends turf conferences, equipment shows, workshops and other educational programs to maintain current knowledge of technical and turf innovations and changes that could affect the departments operation

Desired Experience

REQUIREMENTS

  • Post Secondary Degree/Diploma in Turf Management or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ supervisory experience in golf course management.
  • Valid Alberta Pesticides/Spraying License or willingness to obtain
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Strong knowledge of irrigation maintenance, nutrient and chemical application, and turfgrass management.
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with computers, including Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Willingness to pursue further education as required.
  • Must have knowledge of budgeting and expense management
  • Project Management experience preferred, but not required
  • Professional, responsive, and positive work attitude is essential.
  • Experience with Toro Systems (Irrigation system and equipment) preferred
