Description of Role
As part of the turf management team, the Assistant Superintendent will help uphold the standards that make Meadowlands Golf Club one of Central Alberta’s most enjoyable golf experiences. This is an excellent opportunity to work closely with experienced turf professionals in a hands-on, supportive environment that values teamwork, learning, and pride in craftsmanship.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Assist in daily golf course maintenance operations, including mowing, irrigation, and bunker management.
- Supervise and train grounds crew staff to ensure efficient and high-quality work standards.
- Monitor course conditions and report issues related to turf health, irrigation performance, or pest activity to the Superintendent.
- Be a crucial part in the planning and completion of regular course cultural practices, including fertilization, topdressing, aeration, and overseeding.
- Operate and maintain turf equipment such as mowers, sprayers, and tractors safely and effectively.
- Help manage our TORO irrigation systems, including scheduling, repairs, and adjustments to ensure proper water distribution.
- Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, chemical and fertilizer applications, and equipment use.
- Communicate effectively with the Superintendent, golf operations staff, and other departments to coordinate maintenance around play.
- Promote a positive, team-oriented work environment, fostering professionalism and pride among staff.
Desired Experience
- Education in Turfgrass Management, Horticulture, or a related field (diploma or degree preferred).
- 3-5 years of golf course maintenance experience, with at least one season in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Hands-on experience with all aspects of golf course maintenance — including mowing, irrigation, spraying, and bunker care.
- Working knowledge of turf management practices, such as aeration, fertilization, topdressing, and pest control.
- Familiarity with automated irrigation systems (TORO) — operation, troubleshooting, and repairs.
- Understanding of chemical and fertilizer applications, including safe handling and accurate record-keeping.
- Valid pesticide applicator’s license (or the ability to obtain one).
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to train, motivate, and direct seasonal staff.
- Mechanical aptitude for minor equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Strong work ethic and attention to detail, with flexibility to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required.
