Description of Role
The Second Assistant will be responsible for helping the Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent accomplish their goals for the course. We are looking for like minded individuals who have a love for the sport of golf and a love for how we make that sport possible. Both myself and my assistant are Olds College graduates who have been in the industry for 10+ years and would love to have someone who shares a similar passion.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Assist with scheduling, supervising, and participating in all daily maintenance operations.
- Monitor on course staff during daily operations
- Manage/Run crew on a weekend shift
- Support the preparation, application, and documentation of plant protectants and nutrients.
- Monitor turfgrass health and environmental conditions across all playing surfaces.
- Help train and mentor staff in proper maintenance techniques, standards, and safety procedures.
- Collaborate with leadership to develop and implement short- and long-term agronomic strategies.
- Oversee work assignments and contribute to agronomic decision-making, engaging in hands-on tasks when needed.
- Support the operation, maintenance, and performance of the irrigation system.
Desired Experience
- 1–3 years of progressive turf maintenance experience, with supervisory experience considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of turfgrass management practices, irrigation systems, and equipment operation.
- Alberta Pesticide Applicator’s License (or ability to obtain).
- Strong understanding of plant protectant and nutrient applications, calibration, and record keeping.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills with the ability to motivate and train seasonal staff.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Positive attitude, team-oriented mindset, and genuine pride in maintaining high-quality playing conditions.
